The GP's share of profits above the preferred return.

Promote is how the sponsor gets paid for outperformance. A '70/30 over 8% pref' means after LPs get their 8% preferred return and capital back, additional profits split 70% to LP / 30% to GP. Promote stacks across hurdle tiers — higher performance, larger GP share.
